The first concepts that came to my mind when I listened to your dj session were detail and space. It has a transcendental meditative aura stretching time like a magnifying glass, discovering textures in between the main elements. I remembered you telling me about your preferences for subtle and delicate expressions. Is that what fascinates you in the ambient genre?
When it comes to ambient music it’s really about the textures for me and the sensitive playing of notes. It’s joyous when the right blend of textures fill up your personal aural spectrum (I can literally feel my thoughts get washed out – I guess this is why you call it meditative) and when the playing hits the right notes in your own heart, they express a subtle feeling or movement that can’t be put in words, and suddenly you find the missing piece to feel whole and connected again.
Do you feel that the kind of music you explore somehow ressembles your own personality and state of mind, or is it more of a detached exploration that complements both?
It’s definitely a reflection of what I am experiencing at the moment and in that way it is personal and intimate. I am often shocked when people can relate to it because I can get so insular by nature.
You have moved from Singapore to Berlin 1 year ago. Was that change influenced by music in any way? Do you think it had an impact in the way you experience it?
Yes like many others, I was drawn to Berlin for the music. Funnily enough moving to the mecca of electronic music had repercussions for me. At least when you first make your way around, the sheer volume of options can be overwhelming. I still am finding the little pockets of spaces that I feel comfortable in and tuning to a personal frequency out of the general noise without getting numb or drowned out from it… which can be from your neighbour’s music library to English-singing buskers and random street parties. Music used to be a sanctuary for me and now it’s like living in a zoo with many attractions. But it’s only been a year… and the spaces will eventually be made or found.
What are your current and future projects? Where can people find you?
Besides the techno record label I co-run (Midnight Shift), I’ve been organising small events with ambient music and light technology to create deep listening experiences. I would like to continue these and also explore further concepts. I am actually in a transitory zone right now as I am expecting my first child soon, but I’ve been inspired to create something out of the experience. You can listen to my soundcloud or just tweet me or something.
